The life and times of James Potter and Lily Evans;
The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death
(via evanspotter)
The wonderful bcdaily has agreed to answer some questions! This author is phenomenal, so be sure to go and read her stuff, especially if you’re a Jily fan!
Q: What advice do you have for other writers?
A: KEEP WRITING! Honestly, that’s the best and most important piece of advice anyone can give a writer. Because *rarely* is writing an entirely fun process, and it can become even less so when you’re being critiqued or rejected by publishing houses. But the only way to get better at writing is to keep doing it! You have to learn from your mistakes and rally on. Don’t get discouraged. Just know that it’s *normal* to have your writing stress you out! Eventually, it’s all worth it.
Q: Where do you get your inspiration? What do you think about before writing?
A: I wish I knew where half the barmy ideas I have come from, but honestly, I haven’t the faintest. Some, of course, come from things in my life and people I know, but I try not to get too literal with things like that. I mean, I write to *escape* the mad times of my real world, so why would I want to constantly revisit them? I think it’s much more fun to imagine situations I would *like* to be in. I have a very dramatic imagination. I blame my grandmother, who had me watching Days of Our Lives at age seven. My flair for melodrama comes entirely from that.
When I sit down to write, I focus only on the particular scene I’m working on. I’ve found that I *have* to write in chronological order, otherwise I mess myself up. If I’m focusing too much on a future scene, the scene I’m working on ends up lacking. So I’m very in-the-moment, what-I’m-writing-at-that-time. That’s my general thought process.
Q: What are some things you look for when reading other people’s writing? What, to you, makes a good fan fic?A: Hands down, strong characterization. A thrilling plot is all good and well, but a story without strong characters is, for me, not a story at all. I need characters I can root for, otherwise I don’t particularly care what happens to them. So that’s definitely my one, major qualification. Also, this is just for me personally, but I need some romance in my stories. The more, the better. Good grammar/spelling is always a plus, too. As an editor, too many mistakes like that jump out at me and I can’t finish reading. Those are probably three of my top concerns.
Q: What was going through your head when you wrote “Change”?
A: I wrote “Change” for one of the Lily & James Fests on livejournal, and what influenced it the most was that fandom cliche of “James changed for Lily.” I have endlessly ranted and raved when people say this because I don’t think people realize how much they are *destroying* these endlessly fascinating characters with a claim like that. It’s not romantic. It’s incredibly unhealthy. So when I wrote “Change,” I was kind of exploring this idea of James’s “change.” Because honestly? I don’t think James would have seen it as such. I don’t think he would have viewed himself as having changed, even if he might have done. And more importantly, I don’t think Lily would have *wanted* him to have had such a transformation. The story’s really about them accepting each other for who they are, flaws and all.
Q: What is your favorite pairing/story topic to read?
A: Definitely Lily/James. I entered the HP fandom with Harry/Ginny and they still have a soft spot in my heart, but I’m basically a one-lady-ship now. As for story topics…I don’t even know if I can pick one! As I said earlier, I suppose what I really look for is less the story/plot and more the characterization. I will literally read about James and Lily walking down the street if the characterization is right. Though I will confess to a great enjoyment of smut. If a story has good characterization *and* good smut, I’m basically in paradise.
** CONTEST ** STAY TUNED ** CONTEST **All right, lovely people. I am going to host a contest! Bitches love contests. Awyeah. At any rate, here is what I am thinking:
- I will give the choice of 5 different drawings I’ve done, ones that have not been attributed to text yet. Your job, beautiful entrants, will be to draw inspiration from the chosen pictures and create a mini-fic.
- The fic must be at least 500 words long; it can be as long as you’d like. I like reading, after all.
- Any genre/rating.
- You can set it whenever you’d like: during Hogwarts / post-Hogwarts / during their relationship / before they’re in a relationship / married. Et cetera. Hell, you could even set it after they’ve died. (Cruel, cruel souls.)
- What I want to see is a setting for the scene that I create with my drawings. I want a context, a feeling, an emotion.
WHEN: THE CONTEST IS NOW OPEN AND WILL RUN UNTIL MAY 5TH! That’s a month and a half! Also that’s an easy date for me to remember, since I’m also, you know, graduating college.
WHERE: Send a link to me in my ask box with your submission. YOU MAY SUBMIT UP TO TWO ENTRIES.
WHAT DO YOU WIN!?!?!
- 3 Honorable Mentions will get a sketch of their choice! Give a scenario, and I’ll sketch it.
- THE WINNER OF THIS CONTEST will receive a high-res drawing, completed lines and color, scenario of their choice. Can be random, or if you have a fic or drabble you’d like illustrated I can do that. ALSO, the winner has the option of me printing out their drawing and shipping it to them - only if they are comfortable with that, though. Otherwise, the file can be emailed to them and they can print/do with the drawing as they choose.
SO THERE WE HAVE IT! Questions? Don’t hesitate to ask.
YOUR CHOICE OF IMAGES TO DRAW INSPIRATION FROM WILL BE POSTED IN 4 HOURS!
PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD. REBLOG THIS, HELP ME GET ENTRIES! I really want to see what you guys come up with! :)

Hey Bee!
I saw that the old fanpage for Comm had been deleted or something so I made a new one. I haven’t shared it with anyone yet because I needed to ask you if you were OK with it. If you have any problems, just let me know and I’ll delete it. :)

Of course I don’t mind! I’m glad there’s one up and running again! =)
cute milk is cute :3
I just can’t seem to get over the differences between the plot and the flashbacks in Deathly Hallows.
For example Lily having not known who Snape was.
I know its not a massive difference, but it’s really bothering me.
Not to mention it was published after deathly hallows was. Please say it doesn’t ruin the story?
The story actually wasn’t published after DH. It’s been in progress since before HBP. It was unfortunately a casualty of the mass deletions that were going on in the Lily/James fandom in ‘07ish on ffnet, so I eventually reposted it, hence the later pub date. The story isn’t canon because of when it was written, but I hope you’ll stick around just to see if you can enjoy it despite that.

this all started because i noticed how many anons ask questions about aidan.
a one-track-mind, many have.
but then i decided to summarize all of the different questions bee always answers.
though i have a feeling the “new chapter soon?” questions win over a lot more (maybe 76%); we just don’t see them answered.
I think this is the most glorious thing I’ve ever seen.

when the character in the book/fanfiction you are reading does something really embarrassing and you suffer secondhand embarrassment and you just have to stare at the ceiling and whisper you are an idiot why would you do that oh my god
This sounds like our Lily, doesn’t it? XD

Thank you!

YAY!!!! You are follower 200!!!

I just looked at the follower count for the first time in forever and it’s sitting at 199!
Oh, my goodness.
Like, I don’t even know what to say.
I’m just so happy you all are still following this little blog since I know the quality has kind of gone down and I don’t post as much as I used to. Real Life got in the way and I had to set this blog aside for awhile. I’m slowing getting this blog back up to the quality it was at before.
I promise Milk Shake Monday will be back soon along with chapter excerpts and quotes and lovely James & Lily fan art.
Anyways, you all are awesome!

I will deliver chapters via messenger pigeon or morse code. No worries! We will find a way! ;D
Don’t worry guys!
Bee has got us covered!

Sorry for being a non-existent entity these past few weeks. I’m not dead or seriously ill. I have not given up Commentarius. I haven’t actually decided to become just like Brandi and ditch you all for the Storage Wars. I’m just busy. Work&LifeEtc. I’m still working on 25 whenever I have the chance, but those chances have been few and far between lately. I will keep you updated!
Oh, and sorry about all the lack of ask answering, too. I will get around to all of them at some point. Except the ones that are asking after 25. Which, let’s be honest, is about 75% of them. =P
